THM Motorcycle Treks

Thirsty Horse Mongolia
Text Box:

The Trek

This is a wild and remote little trek to one of the most secret parts of Mongolia  - deep in the 2,500m snow capped peaks of the Khentee Mountains where deer and wolves abound and bears still roam. The tracks are rugged and tough and the support vehicles can’t always follow. Hence, extra petrol is required to be carried, and we’re happier with the lighter bikes.

The trek begins with our well ridden and delightful route skirting around UB across the top of Tov Aimag, stopping by the Tonyugug Stele and arriving in the Terelj Village for a night in one of our favourite hotels  - the UB2. A little horse riding in the evening may be indulged in by those still in the mood for exercise.

The next day the going gets tough as we take the forest trails deep into the mountains heading for the fabled Yestii hot springs. No point doing this route if you are not going to climb the 2,800m peak of Asralt Hairkhan Uul, the Khentee’s highest mountain. So we stop for lunch at the top of the mountain pass and make the climb, before descending to our camp for the night at the hot springs and a camp fire barbeque.

The next day we pick up the trail again and follow the route around to the Princess Temple  - a monument of legend famous not only for the Chinese Princess that it was built for, but also for it’s inaccessibility that saved it from destruction in times past. (Did I mention that this is a tough route to follow?) From the Princess Temple we are blocked to the east by the river and the mountains. So we take the opportunity to ride the whole length of the Terelj Gol Valley back to the Terelj Village and another night in the UB2.

After breakfast the next day we take the main road back through the park, stopping for attractions such as the Turtle Rock and Monk’s hideout long the way. Then continue on the main road to lunch at the giant Ghengis Khan Statue. Leaving the road for the forest paths once again, we arrive at the delightful little lakeside settlement of Mongonmorit and it’s ger camp for this night’s rest.

For the last day we leave early and follow the forest path, breaking cover at the main road. Then head back across the open steppe once more, stopping for a packed lunch and a little nostalgia by our familiar haunt of the Tonyugug Stele. Then we ride the steppe once more for the THM Centre by the airport to finish the journey.

This is a very remote and very tough little trek that is made even more difficult by occasional quagmires in the summer months. But it’s also a very unique journey, even for Mongolia. Add to that the accomplishment of climbing the highest mountain in the Khentee and you have a very rare achievement indeed to add to your memoires.

Note: Please note that THM reserve the right to change the itinerary  at our sole discretion should we judge that conditions, circumstances, or specific team considerations  require it.
